Permanent Senior Building Energy Performance Consultant

Job Description

A world-leading design, engineering, and project management organisation have an opportunity to join their Project & Programme Services team.

 

This opportunity will involve working as part of a midlands Building Energy Performance team which houses a diverse skillset of Building Physics, Building Energy Performance, Net Zero Carbon, Building Fabric and Building Service engineering specialists delivering a wide ranging and rapidly evolving services to public and private sector services.

 

The individual should be commercially astute, comfortable managing multiple commissions and diverse workload, be able to manage accounts and client relationships, have good technical knowledge, be a leader and integrate well into multidisciplinary teams. Having a background in a core professional services discipline such as architecture or Building services engineering before focusing on sustainability would be one way of demonstrating this requirement.

The opportunity will require candidates to be client-facing as well as being involved in the day-to-day design of projects and work closely with the existing management function within the midlands business structure.

 

Their focus is on developing their staff to realise their full potential, with development plans geared to individual needs and abilities. This role will allow development of existing technical skills as well as providing potential to expand digital skills and project management.

Building energy performance, decarbonisation and retrofit skills and experience are an essential aspect of this position to meet the changing demands of our industry and address climate change.

Responsibilities

 

  • Ensuring an understanding of project briefs, developing and delivering varied scopes of service.
  • Be outward facing to the Markets including liaising with clients, professional organisations, contractors, suppliers, and sub-contractors – able to develop new and/or existing areas of business.
  • Be able to ‘own’ the necessary responses to project opportunities and provide both strategic & specific input into bids and proposals.  Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with new and existing clients. Able to discuss the operating and business unit technologies and markets.
  • Responsible for the preparation of fee proposals for submission to potential Clients with an ability to realistically estimate pricing and produce successful responses to bids across a range of expertise.
  • Operate the Quality Assurance system, quality control and document management in line with current policy.
  • Assisting in the monitoring of and reporting on capital and fee expenditure.
  • Lead complex and high value projects from a Building Energy Performance perspective.
  • Provide client strategy to achieve individual site and estate wide decarbonisation.
  • Carry out the production of detailed calculations using industry standard software tools.
  • Preparing technical specifications and develop design drawings.
  • Site surveys, inspections, and monitor site works.
  • Report and technical note writing.
  • Maintaining complete records and archives to company standards.
  • Adherence to all quality, environmental & governance processes.
  • Managing own and others workload, updating forward plan of workload regularly and working to time allocations.
  • Managing elements of project delivery and an understanding of budget costings.
  • Reviewing progress, including reporting any anomalies and changes of scope to the project lead.
  • Assist with technical development of junior staff.
  • Identify manage and record business opportunities.
  • Mange the commercial aspects of appointments.

 

Requirements:

  • Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in related subjects.
  • Hold sustainability / energy / carbon qualifications/accreditations.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards CEng) with CIBSE or IET.
  • Effective team worker, contributing to the team and wider objectives.
  • Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to understand and express technical concepts clearly and accurately. Effective presenter/communicator able to author and deliver presentations/detailed reports.
  • Working knowledge of common forms of contract such as NEC, JCT etc.
  • Awareness of key legislation, regulations, and industry standards relevant to Building Services, i.e., building regs, London Plan, BREEAM, etc.
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties as required by the management team from time to time in order to maintain flexibility in the organisation.
  • Good level of computer literacy in a range of digital tools.
  • Proficient energy reduction methods and approaches to decarbonising new and existing buildings.
  • Knowledge of energy and carbon related data capture and analytics.
  • Awareness of the principles of building physics such as passive design solutions and fabric first approaches.
  • Some awareness of designing for measurement and verification, including experience of commissioning and post installation evaluation of performance.
  • Experience of working in a design consultancy and/or some experience of working within a contractor design environment is beneficial.
  • Good knowledge of appropriate technical standards.
  • Able to take charge of personal project deliverables, make decisions on developing the discipline design elements, act on own initiative and operate in a pro-active way.
  • Good report writing skills, experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with clients will be useful.
  • Comfortable working within time and cost budgets as agreed at project briefing meetings.
  • Undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties as required by the management team from time to time, in order to maintain flexibility in the organisation.
